"Knock-Down" Texture is the most common texture being used in modern homes. It is also the most common type of drywall repair I do, other than flat. This type of drywall texture is applied by spraying drywall with drywall mud, using a hopper or industrial drywall texturing system. 

The term 'knock down" comes from the fact that after it is sprayed with mud, it is then flattened with a trowel or large plastic spatula type tool.

"Orange Peel" Texture is also commonly used on drywall walls and ceilings. Orange Peel Texture is applied in a similar manner to Knockdown Texture drywall but it is easier to match and less costly to repair. Orange Peel drywall texture is applied with a hopper or industrial sprayer system and once it is applied, it is finished and ready to prime/paint.

"Popcorn Texture" was a very common way to finish drywall ceilings for decades, up to about the last decade or two. Popcorn texture is applied with a hopper gun or industrial texture machine and once applied, it is ready to paint.

Necessity of this texture is certainly one of the most unclear. Typically people who have it would rather not have it but they don't want to deal with the painstaking mess that comes with removing it.
